A rock legend passed away Tuesday. Buddy Miles, the drummer most famously known for his stint with Jimi Hendrix and the band of Gypsies, Buddy also played with Carlos Santana, Jaco Pastorius, Electric Flag among others. I was fortunate enough to meet Buddy about a year ago when I was hired by good friend Rich Diaz to be a stage manager for one of his shows. We were hanging out after the sound check, and Buddy talked about some of the days with Jimi. Rich got me an autographed photo of the 1969 New Year’s Eve Band of Gypsies rehearsal after the show. Buddy recalled those rehearsals, being dwarfed on either side by huge stacks of amplifiers, and having to compete with the massive sound coming from Jimi and Billy. It was a fantastic night, and I feel extremely fortunate to have been involved with it.
We could see that Buddy’s deteriorating health was affecting him, but he still got out there and performed the best he could.
Tonight we did a bit of a tribute in memory of Buddy. Urban, Mark and I threw down the usual Red House, then blasted into Earth Blues, a much more obscure tune by Jimi Hendrix. Urban layed down some serious Buddy Miles drumlines, Mark was kicking the bass. I brought out a ‘66 Stratocaster, ‘69 and ‘73 Marshall Super Basses along with my ‘71 Marshall Bass 4 x 12 cab. Trying to get into the Jimi zone with some period gear and motivation. It REALLY turned out well. I was a bit spiritually lifted I guess you could say.
I drank a beer for you tonight Buddy, may you rest in peace and now be jammin’ with Jimi in the afterlife.
