Growing up in the musical family that produced Texas legend Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, young Curley Mays decided he'd have to do something a little different to set himself apart. After learning to pick guitar the regular way, with his hands, Curley taught himself some tricks, mastering guitar playing behind his back, with his teeth, over his shoulder, and with his feet. Curley spent years on the road after that, touring the U.S. in the Curley Mays Show, opening for acts that included Etta James...B.B. King...T. Bone Walker...Bobby Blue Bland...Tina Turner...Fats Domino...Nat King Cole...the Count Basie Orchestra...the Nicholas Brothers...Billy Eckstine...Redd Foxx, and of course, Curley's famous uncle, Gatemouth Brown.
