The San Antonio Blues Society Inc., a Texas not-for-profit 501(3)c corporation founded in October of 1990, was established for the sole purpose of promoting and preserving blues music. It is our mission to ensure the continuation of blues music by offering educational programs within our community and to preserve locations and artifacts relevant to the history of blues music and its artists.

We support blues venues and blues artists through our promotional efforts and participation in blues related activities and events, and by encouraging our community to appreciate the historical value and the enjoyment of blues music.

Through S.A.B.S. educationl programs in our local schools and scholarships awarded to area students, we encourage our youth to find enjoyment and fulfillment in the rich legacy that is American Blues.

The "Blues News" is published quarterly for members and friends of the Society. The newsletter features interviews, photos, reviews, upcoming events, and all things 'blues'!

Articles, recordings, pictures, and other blues related materials are donated to and accepted by the San Antonio Blues Society. Submitted items come from Members and Friends of the Society and other sources. Any material may be submitted either a) by email or b) by postal delivery to P.O. Box 33952, San Antonio, TX 78265.  - The San Antonio Blues Society ... dedicated to Keeping The Blues Alive!

FIESTA BLUES HERITAGE SERIES  An official event of the annual Fiesta San Antonio celebration since 2005. An eclectic presentation of blues and blues influenced music, this event funds various S.A.B.S. projects, including “Blues in the Schools” and the “Sam Baird Scholarship” fund. Held the last day of Fiesta at the beautiful surroundings of Sunset Station, it is the perfect combination of San Antonio’s beautiful spring climate and the soulful sounds passed down through the generations.

ROBERT JOHNSON SA SESSIONS FESTIVAL  This event pays tribute to one of the founding fathers of blues music. We celebrate the recordings made by Robert Johnson in San Antonio back in 1936 at the historical Sheraton-Gunter Hotel, including “Sweet Home Chicago”, “Cross Road Blues”, and “Ramblin’ on My Mind”. The festival is an annual S.A.B.S. November event dating back to 2001 and has been held at Sam's Burger Joint as well as the Historic Sheraton-Gunter Hotel.

BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS  Preserving the heritage of blues music in our region is not our only task. We bring the music to the community via the local school system. Live performances at the local schools give our young people the chance to hear the music that is the foundation of what they listen to today! Since 2004, our “professors”, Member Artists & Guests, have played music backed with the facts and histories of the music that is part of our national heritage.

SAM BAIRD SCHOLARSHIP  Announced in 2006, this local scholarship fund is awarded to students displaying academic strength and musical ambition. This award is presented annually at the Fiesta Blues Heritage Series.

BLUES JAMS / BLUES SHOWS  With the support of our member venues we are able to bring outstanding blues acts on a regular basis to our membership and audiences. The S.A.B.S. roster of Member Bands is recognizable and noteworthy, including not only top-level San Antonio talent, but also touring acts that are world renowned. Sign up and play!
